The third edition of the « European
symposium on Research in Architecture, Urban and Landscape design » is
organised by the association of the Higher Institutes of Architecture of
Brussels-Liege-Mons (IESA), that is the Victor Horta Higher Institute, the
Lambert Lombard Higher Institute and the Higher Institute of Architecture
of Mons as well as the National Higher School of Architecture of Marseille
(ENSA Marseille), patronised by Mrs Marie-Dominique Simonet, the Minister
for Higher Education, Scientific research and International Relations in
the Government of the French Community of Belgium and Mr Renaud Donnedieu
de Vabres, the French Minister for Culture and Communication. This symposium aims to settle a European network for research in architecture, urban and landscape design, which shall be created through an official agreement between partners coming from the scientific community (research entities, schools and higher institutes of architecture, universities) and professionals (town planners, planning consultants, building or town planning project managers, clients). The network shall develop through a European non profit organisation. EURAU'06 Brussels shall follow the path opened during the first two editions, in Marseille in May 2004 (250 delegates from 25 countries) and in Lille in November 2005. It aims to carry on developing long lasting co-operation and exchanges between various European networks and institutions as well as gathering the scientific community and professionals. Architectural heritage is indeed a topic which may unite European countries. As early as 1975, the European Charter of the Architectural Heritage was adopted by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in Amsterdam. « Recognizing that the architectural heritage, an irreplaceable expression of the wealth and diversity of European culture, is shared by all people and that all the European States must show real solidarity in preserving that heritage; Considering that the future of the architectural heritage depends largely upon its integration into the context of people's lives and upon the weight given to it in regional and town planning and development schemes; Asserts its determination to promote a common European policy and concerted action to protect the architectural heritage based on the principles of integrated conservation » The member States of the European Council signed the Convention for the Protection of the Architectural Heritage of Europe in Grenada in 1985, to confirm and reiterate those principles. « Recalling the importance of handing down to future generations a system of cultural references, improving the urban and rural environment and thereby fostering the economic, social and cultural development of States and regions; Acknowledging the importance of reaching agreement on the main thrust of a common policy for the conservation and enhancement of the architectural heritage » Hence the fact the « 3rd European symposium on Research in Architecture, Urban and Landscape design » to be held in Brussels in 2006 is mainly focused on heritage thus pursuing the same goals of looking into those issues while aspiring to reach the same uniting spirit. Four topics are open to European researchers, professors, teachers, recent PhDs and doctoral students involved in research in architecture and urban design.
